Front End Website Designer - Consultancy

Objective:

Columbia Global Centers | Africa (CGC Africa) is part of Columbia University’s global network of centers, which together aim to create opportunities in research, scholarship and teaching around the world, and expand Columbia’s mission as a global university. Established in Nairobi in 2011, CGC Africa links the continent to Columbia’s scientific rigor, technological innovation, and academic leadership. The Centre works closely with policy makers, governments, and regional and African institutions, providing them with objective, science-based advice.

The goal of the African Soils Information Service Project is to improve the management, productivity and sustainability of African soils through the acquisition and application of near real-time and location-specific information about land and soils. The Project supports evidence based decision-making that will enhance agricultural and economic development, environmental sustainability and climate change adaptation across Africa.

Background

The Africa Soils Information Service is seeking an experienced, innovative and creative front–end website developer in order to update and design its new website.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Consultant will be tasked to accomplish the following specific deliverables:

  • Design a new AfSIS website that is visually appealing, has a unified theme and design, and is easy to navigate;
  • Plan and prepare a prototype design of the website based on consultation with relevant stakeholders and AfSIS team members.
  • Review the prototype with stakeholders/ AfSIS team members.
  • Create/customize an open source Content Management System (CMS) that is reliable and with support base worldwide, and will permit non- technical staff to instantly update web site content, add modules or sections, and integrate elements, such as blogs and twitter feeds.
  • Build infrastructure for efficient content management
  • Provide training to relevant stakeholders, where necessary, to manage the content;
  • Ensure that the new website is compatible with all the relevant latest internet browsers.

Specific Deliverables:

  • A prototype design of the website based on consultation with relevant stakeholders and AfSIS team members.
  • A new AfSIS website that is visually appealing, has a unified theme and design, and is easy to navigate;

Minimum requirements.

  • University degree or relevant training and/or experience in Graphic Design and/or Web Design
  • At least 3 years of experience in designing visions and layout for web portals
  • Thorough knowledge, understanding of and experience with web design proved through portfolio of designed products
  • Outstanding graphic design skills
  • Knowledge of and experience with designing, developing and implementing themes/skins for example Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress CMS.
  • Solid knowledge on website security and website hosting service
  • Work Setting
  • Duration of consultancy: upto 15 days or on completion of assignment.
  • Reporting: The consultant will report directly to the AfSIS Director.
  • The consultant will primarily be based at the CGCA offices in Nairobi
