The volunteer will be provided a subsidy for the duration of the contract, which in no way may be considered a salary.
Background:
Fairtrade Africa (FTA) is the umbrella organisation representing Fairtrade certified
producers in Africa. FTA aims to effectively represent producers within the International Fairtrade system and to contribute to livelihood improvement of African producers by increasing access to markets.
Established in 2005, FTA directs policy and strategic development of the organisation. FTA has four (4) regional networks – Eastern, Southern, West and Middle East and North Africa supporting producer activities.
Job Purpose and Reporting:
Initiating preparations for the 2016 Africa Fairtrade Convention and the African Assemby. Both events are usually one after the other and contribute to our strategic objectives of market access, visibility, relevant services and representation.
The Africa Fairtrade Convention provides a platform through which the voices of African farmers and workers are heard. Drawing over 200 (minimum) small-scale farmer producers and workers, international traders and distributors, relevant policy makers and academics, as well as our partner organizations and Fairtrade stakeholders across a global system; the discussions centre on improving trade conditions and associated livelihoods of grassroots farmers and workers towards sustainable development in Africa.
The second event is the African Assembly which is the highest authority of the Organisation and comprises all authorised delegates from the four regions Eastern, Southern, West and Middle
East and North Africa, the assembly meets every 2 years to elect new members to the Board.
Specific Tasks
- Prepare a workplan (e.g. Ghant Charts) with clear timelines and budget
- Leading the process of developing a theme for the convention
- Putting together a list of potential attendees and sourcing for potential funding and partnerships for the convention
- Marketing the dates and location of the AFC to the FTA membership and other stakeholders
- Ensuring that the FTA website is updated with the AFC materials
- Coordinate member and guest invitations
- Social media outreach and Media engagement
- Coordinate program preparation to include relevant workshops
- Liaise with committee on identification of speakers and facilitation for the workshops
- Coordinate event logistics; including venue, hotels, visas, transportation
- Coordinate persons engaged (including in the host country) to provide services for the event
- Prepare workshop and meeting resource tools including brochures, adverts
- Post-planning evaluation/analysis and reporting (including recommendations)
- Other duties that may arise and as assigned by the committee from time to time Knowledge and
Experience Required
- Degree in Communications, International Development or any relevant qualification
- At least 1 year event organizing experience and understanding of event processes, technologies and resources
- Excellent computer skills with clear understanding of database management
- Excellent organisational and multi-tasking skills to ensure that objectives are achieved;
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines, without losing attention to detail;
- Strong experience in managing budgets and negotiation of contracts;
- Proven track of a creative approach to problem-solving;
- Excellent communication skills to enable effective interaction;
